What is a Newf-igonian?

Well, a Newf-igonian is a person who has moved to Halifax Regional Municipality from Newfoundland and made it home.

In order to qualify you must have lived here for at least 5 years in order to appreciate the province and its diverse people.

During that time you must have blended the two cultures that is the Haligonian style of living with the Newfoundlander’s way of living.

Now you have become a Newf-igonian and so you have blended the way you cook, eat, drink, talk, dress, shop etc.

For instance with the traditional turkey dinner the vegetables are no longer cooked with salt beef but are now served steamed. (It’s just as yummy, you can’t beat a turkey dinner especially when it’s served with lots of family present. My sister Barbara came here to teach school almost 40 years ago, she usually has sweet potato and squash with her turkey dinner.

The things we take for granted back in Newfoundland, like a walk on the beach along the ocean, are now a treat and those who can be found walking along are just as friendly and appreciative of the great Atlantic Ocean.

As a real estate agent I often knock on doors in metro and have the privilege of chatting with many Newfoundlanders who have lived here for many years and have great stories to tell about what first brought them here and how Halifax has become home.

This website is created for all those Newf-igonians who have stories to tell about how they have blended the two cultures.
